A Gem of a Day on Amethyst Pillar and Grey Slab: Photo Gallery Nearing the end of the long approach – Andy takes in the view of Coire Sputan Dearg from the col above Lochan Uaine. A bone dry Grey Man’s Crag looking inviting in the morning sunshine. Amethyst Pillar is the tapering buttress in the centre of the picture and Grey Slab takes the clean slabby corner running from bottom right to centre top. Andy mid way up the first pitch of Amethyst Pillar, after taking in a few extra metres of climbing at the start. Pulling over the bulge into the hanging corner high on the first pitch of Amethyst Pillar. Looking down the first pitch and the exposure is already building! Photo credit: Andy Harrison. Sunshine, perfect rock and big holds; what’s not to love? The easy but still superb second pitch. Photo credit: Andy Harrison. Regaining some composure after the crux section on pitch three – tricky 5b climbing with plenty of jamming. Photo credit: Andy Harrison. Not a bad view from the plateau! Looking north towards Strath Nethy and Beinn Mheadoin from the top of Coire Sputan Dearg. Looking up Grey Man’s Buttress from the base of the cliff. Grey Slab starts just left of centre and climbs steep broken rock to gain the base of the clean slabby corner. Andy linking the first couple of pitches of Grey Slab in the blazing heat. We couldn’t see a good reason to split this into two short pitches as it’s still only 30m and rope drag is not an issue. Looking down on to the crux section and the best climbing on the route – finger-tip lay-backing with smeary feet. Photo credit: Andy Harrison.
